Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK)
by Rev Laurie Rupert
Heartfelt thank you to CSMC for the grant that has positively impacted children in the Calgary community! Being part of our ministry makes me proud and being able to contribute in any way to something this important and meaningful, warms my soul.
Every school day, volunteers in BB4CK Central and community kitchens across Calgary prepare and deliver lunches to schools, ensuring that any child who arrives without enough food receives a healthy, balanced meal. Lunches include, fruits, vegetables, baked items, and snacks designed to support children’s well-being and help them focus, play, and grow. This work is only possible because of the generosity of donors, sponsors, and community members who give their time, resources, and care to support children every school day.
Here are some statistics on BBK4K impact:
- Close to 8000 kids from kindergarten through grade 12 are served every school day
- Over 290 schools are supported
- 650 volunteers help prepare and deliver
- No waitlist for kids
This grant has filled hungry bellies!
Food insecurity continues to affect more families, and rising food costs have made it increasingly difficult for parents and caregivers to ensure their children are well fed. At this time, I can only see it getting worse for the next decade. This reality brings daily challenges and heartbreak to families and communities.
There was a time my family was impacted and we utilized this type of service for a couple of months, so this is dear to my heart.
Children are our future, and when people are able to give—whether through time, resources, or advocacy—we can help reduce hunger and lessen the stigma surrounding food insecurity with this dignified approach.
It is a heavy burden on kids and their parents. I will continue to support and advocate for this important work, and when I retire, I hope to offer my time and presence wherever it is most helpful.
Thank you sincerely for this grant. I’m so proud of our spiritual community.
Let’s focus on our children as they are one of our greatest gifts, and together we can help nourish them—both now and for the future.
